Learn How To Deal With Stress
By Jessica Cudar, A.P.
In today's technologically advanced, fast-paced world we all have our share of stress. We are plugged into society 24/7 and if you are not engaged at the moment, there is certainly a call, page, fax, email or text on the way. The fact of the matter is that stress affects most people in some uncomfortable way. It is no wonder that everyday countless individuals are feeling excessive amounts of pressure and anxiety. Each of us can be affected by both internal and external stress. Internal stressors are restrictions that we have created based on societal programming gathered from family, teachers, friends and media networks. These are the emotions governing us whether we are aware of them or not. For example, constant worry and fear are forms of internal stress. External stress comes from your physical environment and it is produced by the expectations and difficulties that we are typically confronted with on a daily basis. These are the factors we are conscious of such as work, personal relationships and finances. Both forms of stress can be detrimental to us mentally and physically.
Everyone handles stress differently. At times stress can be difficult to address because it is a subjective sensation with various symptoms. The ability to handle stress effectively is determined by overall physical and mental health. Proper nutrition combined with adequate amounts of exercise and sleep are vital components to the health and well-being of every individual. These are the building blocks to obtaining optimal health. Unmanaged stress can lead to weight gain, decreased immunity and insomnia just to name a few. Initially, it may be important to recognize unhealthy ways of coping with stress. Certain individuals may use anger as a form of stress relief and lash out at others. Many people internalize their stress and deal with it through addiction or emotional eating. While others may have been suppressing their stress for so long that it shows up in the form of chronic illness that worsens when they are under intense amounts of stress. The key to handling stress appropriately is to find healthy outlets.
No two people are exactly the same and what works for one person may not be suitable for another. If you have tried to deal with your stress and you are not experiencing relief, acupuncture can alleviate this unwanted tension that has been plaguing you incessantly. Acupuncture has been a viable healing modality used for thousands of years to treat a wide range of conditions. When practiced by a qualified Acupuncture Physician, it is an extremely safe healing modality with no serious side effects. Studies indicate that acupuncture works by releasing endorphins (natural anti-stress chemicals) into the body thereby decreasing healing time; relieving pain and bringing the patient back to health. These endorphins promote relaxation, create a sense of well-being and enhance immunity. Acupuncture is routinely and successfully used to treat stress, anxiety and depression as well as a multitude of other conditions. It is crucial that we find ways to deal with our anxieties instead of just covering them up with a substance or pretending that they do not exist at all.
